Anything that last for 34 years as an event held annually has to have something unique going for it, no matter of what the event is composed. The SAM 27 Crash & Bash certainly has that going for it in spades. Since 1989 this event has been held at the Schmidt Ranch in Elk Grove, California and that venue has been a big part of the event's success. Miriam Schmidt's home features acres and acres of open field surrounding a grassy tree-filled yard that makes for a lovely environment for Vintage Model flying.

Miriam's late husband, Loren Schmidt began hosting SAM model contests and asked Miriam to continue them when he passed. In recent years Miariam has finished off space in Loren's old workshop into a modeler's "Rumpus Room" that is decorated with modeling paraphanlia and is utilized for meals and as a meeting venue away from the flying field. Delicious lunches are served at the field on Saturday and Sunday and a catered banquet is served on Saturday and ample opportunity for socializing with modelers and friends from all of California and neighboring states as well as international guests from Australia and Europe. Contest flying begins on Friday afternoon and continues into the early evening as spaghetti/lasagna is being served and eaten. Camping space is provided and many contestants bring their RVs to Elk Grove.

The contest flying can be very intense at times but most folks take the laid-back easy-going attitude that exemplifies SAM flying into their flying at "the Ranch." Fun and fellowship are the watchwords for the SAM 27 Crash & Bash at the Schmit Ranch.

Contest flying lookin' pretty intense eh?

This year the SAM Champs are being held 600+ miles to the south of the Crash & bash in Boulder City, Nevada (near Las Vegas) beginning on the Sunday after the Crash & Bash. We hope that international modelers planning to attend the SAM Champs will plan their travel to arrrive a week early so they can enjoy the Crash & Bash with us in Elk Grove, California.

Some lunch room eh? Miriam Schmidt and friends enjoy conversation. Lunchtime in "The Rumpus Room."
