Purpose

SAM 27 promotes the the skills and enjoyment of building and flying antique model  airplanes.

The club arranges mentors to assist and guide, if required, in four areas:

  • Building and construction

  • Covering and finishing

  •  Trimming and flying

  • Competitive flying

SAM 27 is a Chapter of the Society of Antique Modelers (SAM). It is a specialized club which builds and flies pre 1943 model airplanes, built from balsa. The goal is to preserve the skills and enjoyment of construction and craftsmanship, and ensure crash-free flying.

Activities

At the field the main activity is flying, and keeping the planes aloft, just like the hawks, by riding the rising air currents.

We also have fun-flys, barbeques, building sessions and workshops, invite other clubs, hold off-site meetings, have  auctions and enjoy pizza and beer, and a grand party at the end of the year.

SAM 27's major annual contest, known as "Crash & Bash", is held at Schmidt Ranch,  and is attended by flyers from as far away as Europe and Australia.

About Contests

Many people think that contests are all about winning. That is true in the professional world where it is your living. But in recreational contests this is a sure way not to enjoy them, since there is only one winner.

The greater your skills, the greater your enjoyment. And there is no faster way to grow skills than the natural focus on flying your best in a contest. You can see it happen to your colleagues as the year progresses.

With this in mind, SAM 27 organizes several competition series at the club field during the year. The mood is relaxed, and the flights slow and majestic. So come fly with us. Forget about winning -- and just enjoy flying your best, and the way your skill and confidence grows. You will eventually win a few anyway.

Models

Before 1943, model airplanes were flown free flight, and many still are today. However most are now radio controlled with lightweight and reliable systems. SAM 27 specializes in both free flight and radio control model flying.
