Fly well, win

Fall 2010

MAY 21 WARM UP CONTEST

This was rescheduled from a windy May 14 to a beautiful May 21.  We had a warm, clear day with a light breeze. Thermal activity was light too, and no one achieved a 15 minute max. But flying was good from 9 till 1 o'clock. An unlimited number of flights was allowed, and some flyers enjoyed the great weather and completed a large number..

The Good Guys list is for the non-mentors. The mentors were left to show their skills on a separate list.

THE GOOD GUYS LIST

Pilot

Plane Best two times Total Place
Bob Rose Airborn 9:48 8:52 18:48 1
Chip Buss Airborn 4:28 10:27 14:55 2
Jay Beasley Airborn 8:25 6:29 14:54 3
Rich Minnick Diamond Demon 6:32 4:32 11:04 4
Sid Maxwell Puss Moth       DNS

Bob Rose flew aggressively. He was in first place early in the contest. Then he completed a total of 5 flights to try for still better times. A well deserved win.

Jay Beasley and Chip Buss both arrived with brand new immaculate Airborns. They made the maiden flights at the meet. (See maiden flight page). They both placed essentially equal at second place.

Chip made the longest reported flight of the month at 10:27 with the flight immediately following the maiden flight.

Rich Minnick had to leave early to meet winery business visitors, but completed two successful flights..

Sid Maxwell's Puss Moth had a strut attachment problems and was not able to compete.

THE MENTOR LIST

Pilot

Plane Best two times Total Place
Don Bekins Dallaire 9:52 13:10 23:02 1
Andrew Tickle Dallaire  9:43 6:27 16:10 2
Dick Irwin Cloud Chopper 13:48   13:48 3
Bob Film Airborn 8:57   8:57 4
Ed Solenberger Airborn "See next contest" DNS

Don Bekins was appointed Mentor-at-Large. He flew a newly converted Dallaire Sportster which was the clear winner on the Mentor list..

Dick Irwin had the longest flight of the day, making 13:48 at 9 o'clock in the morning before the ground was even warm. What causes these rising air currents so early in the day?

Andrew Tickle's 22 oz Dallaire 400 flew Ok, but did not get the height of the16 oz. Airborns. One flight was scrubbed because the motor had to be restarted to avoid landing among the sheep on Tom Crane's ranch.

Ed Sollenberger flew a much valued Airborn built by Nick Kelez, and made some good flights. His posted score of "See next contest" meant that he was not ready to risk such a valuable airplane in competitive flying until he was totally familiar with it. We all appreciate the care given to this airplane.
