Build a 490 Sq Inch Lanzo Airborn

By Tandy Walker Arlington, Texas

I have finished up the stab mount on the Airborn.  Here are some pictures showing the various steps.
Picture 1  This shows the the fore and aft 1/16" plywood stab mounting plates epoxied in place on the two top longerons after the removal of the jigging and stab.

Picture 3  This shows 1/16" sheet balsa filled in both forward and between the stab mounting plates.  A piece of 1/16" plywood was used to fill in behind the aft stab mounting plate to prevent wear in that area.  Notice also that the two center holes in the stab mounting plates used for jigging have been plugged all the way through with dowels to further strengthen the joints.  The stab plates are now a platform on the fuselage that is flat all the way across.

Picture 5  Finally, this shows the fairing forward of the stab L.E.  with the stab mounted in place.

Picture 3   I pinned down both ends of the T.E. down over the 1/32" blocking tabs on the plans.  Then I pushed an aluminum straight edge against the rear edge of the T.E. and finished pinning down the T.E.  This insures that the T.E. is straight.  By the way, after doing this I could see that the drawn T.E. on the plans were also quite straight!

Next I pinned down the 1/8" square bottom forward balsa spar.  I also cut out two additional W2 ribs to replace the two W3 notched ribs, since I am building a one piece wing.  Before gluing the ribs in place, I drilled two fore and aft No. 44 holes in each rib to provide venting between rib bays.  Then I glued all except the inclined tip ribs in place as shown in the third picture below.

Picture 2  This shows the first step of filling in between the two top longerons, under the plywood plates, with 3/16" balsa sheet to tie the two longerons together and provide a bigger foot print for bonding the fore and aft stab mounting plates.

Picture 4  A fairing forward of the stab L.E. was made and glued in place as per the plans.  This shows that fairing.  Notice the aft face of the fairing is lined with 1/64" plywood to provide durable surface.  Also notice that additional balsa has been added at the rear of the fuselage to support the third rudder hinge.

I have been studying the Airborn's wing plans carefully for a while and I have decided to build the wing in one piece instead of having removable wing tips.  Yesterday, I started construction on the Airborn wing's center panel.

Picture 1 & 2   First, I marked the rib positions on the T.E. and cut the 1/16" X 1/8" notches.  In accordance with Jim O'Reilly's Cad plans, I cut out twenty 1/4" X 1/2" blocking tabs from 1/32" balsa sheet and pinned them in place on the wing center panel plan as shown in the first two pictures.

Picture 4  This shows a close up of the ribs in position on the blocked up T.E and the 1/8" square bottom forward balsa spar.  Note the three W1 ribs on the right, which are recessed ribs for the 1/16" planking, are seen at rib/T.E. juncture.

Once this has had time to thoroughly dry, I will glue in two temporary inclined tip ribs using the inclination jig pieces provided.  I will then glue on the 1/4" L.E. and all of the top spars before removing the structure from the plans.  The all of the spars will be sanded flush with the temporary inclined tip rib.................Tandy

I just went back in the model room and took this end on shot of the wing center panel structure to show the two fore and aft No. 44 holes in each rib to provide venting between rib bays................Tandy
